It was a busy day in the ED, and we received news that Derby ED would be transferring an autistic 20-year-old patient to us. This patient struggled with some strong emotions and behaviors that, unfortunately, resulted in a fracture to the patient’s arm. In this report, AMR advised the patient would greatly benefit from over-the-ear headphones to minimize noise and stress, but unfortunately, we do not have these. Laura heard about the situation and didn’t hesitate to spring into action! Within 5 minutes, Laura came around the corner with some bright blue headphones. She went above and beyond by calling her husband and having him bring in their family’s personal pair of headphones, so they were ready for the patient the second he arrived. Because of Laura’s huge heart and top-tier nursing skills, the patient was able to smoothly and quietly be tucked in with no added stress to the patient, family, or staff. Due to Laura’s actions, the patient was to have his arm reduced and be discharged home.

Laura is an amazing nurse who is always showing the highest level of care and compassion to every single patient, family member, and staff member she interacts with! We are lucky to have such an amazing person on this team!!
