Pina helped facilitate the Tele Oncology and National Tele Oncology grids and schedules during the recent retirement of Black Hills Health Care System’s oncology provider. This ensured ongoing care provisions allowing oncology follow-ups and oncology treatments for our Veterans to continue without delay.
Pina helps us in the Oncology /Chemo Infusion Dept, including filling in to assist with patient care when needed. Pina ensures that the chemotherapy staff is current on new practice standards within our department, as well as within the facility, by communicating with us in biweekly meetings. Changes in standards of care, safety standards, and concerns within the facility departments are often discussed and followed up on by her post-meeting discussion.
Pina Bryan has taken on many roles recently. Pina took on the chairperson position with the Veteran Experience Committee for Black Hills Health Care Systems after the acting coordinator left that position. Pina stepped into this position without the support of the previous coordinator’s expertise, ensuring this committee remained a priority for the Veterans within the Black Hills Health Care System. Pina has her certification in Ambulatory Care and uses this knowledge to coordinate care between physicians, specialty providers, nursing staff, and pharmacy to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams. Pina has been instrumental in helping the formation of National Tele Oncology clinics, as well as Tele Minneapolis Oncology, to build grids and schedules in anticipation of the retirement of our current Oncology provider. This has ensured seamless continuation for our Oncology/Hematology Veterans. Pina has also provided support for our Oncology Nurse Practitioner during this transition. Pina also assists when needed with the coordination of veteran care between the infusion clinic, ICU, and inpatient hospital when urgent care is needed for critical oncology veterans.
Pina Bryan alerts the chemotherapy staff with current standards of practice from other facilities within the VISN, as well as pharmacy standards and safety standards brought forth through administrative/ managerial meetings. Pina has continued to collaborate with education and the chemotherapy nurses in the development and continuation of yearly chemotherapy competencies. Pina has also been instrumental in encouraging each oncology nurse to study to obtain the Oncology Nurse Certification. This ensured ongoing care provisions allowing oncology follow-ups and oncology treatments for our Veterans to continue without delay. When the Inpatient Mental Health Department was closed during renovation, Pina took on nursing staff from that Department. Pina and the Primary Care staff trained the mental health nurses in PACT. This training lightened the burden on current PACT nurses and allowed Veterans to receive the quality standards of care they deserve.
