At 77 years old, I broke my hip and ended up in rehab following hospitalization. All staff in both hospitals were wonderful. But one nurse stood out. Lisa was and is there for me, and obviously, nursing is a passion, not just a job. When my daughter and friend were pressuring me to foster out my dog, my baby, it threw me for a loop. I was sad, depressed, and felt like a child being bullied. Lisa overheard some of the conversation, and after they left, she came to me and just held me, seeming to have understanding and empathy for the emotional pain I was in. She helped me more than she could ever know. This is who she is, and I love her for her empathy and caring. She understood what I was going through. Thank you, my dear Lisa. Her empathy is not a requirement for graduating from nursing school. One either has it or one doesn’t. Lisa has been there for my physical needs, but much more importantly, she has been there for my emotional pain. Something that is far more important than controlling my physical pain. What Lisa has cannot be learned. She is one amazing human being, and she has helped me more than she can ever know.
