Matt, Director of the Neurosurgical ICU and Acute Stroke Neurosurgical Stepdown unit, consistently demonstrates the essence of what it means to be a compassionate, servant leader. His leadership is rooted in empathy, integrity, and a deep commitment to both his staff and our patients. He models the caring behaviors we strive to provide at the bedside every day.

Matt leads by example. He is present and approachable, often rounding through the unit to check in not only on patient flow but also on the emotional well-being of his team. Even with an office located outside of the unit, he truly shows he has an open-door policy. He takes time to listen, to celebrate our wins, and to guide us through challenges.

One of Matt’s greatest strengths is the way he communicates. He naturally chooses his words carefully, always speaking with kindness, respect, and thoughtfulness, whether he’s addressing a patient’s family or supporting a team member through a difficult situation. His calm, reassuring tone helps de-escalate tension and brings comfort and clarity. He reminds us that our words carry weight and that how we speak can be just as healing as what we do.

What also stands out about Matt is who he is as a person. He leads with humility and never hesitates to lend a hand. If he sees a piece of trash on the floor, he’s the first to pick it up. If someone asks for directions, he doesn’t just point – he walks them there. He doesn’t just talk about teamwork; he shows it through his actions every single day. His “get up and do it” attitude inspires the rest of us to take pride in even the smallest details of our work.

Perhaps most inspiring of all, Matt embodies quiet resilience. Even while facing personal challenges that most would find overwhelming, he has continued to lead with unwavering dedication, strength, and positivity. He never seeks sympathy or recognition; he only seeks to ensure that his staff and patients are supported. His courage and selflessness are a true reflection of his character and of the nursing spirit itself.

Matt promotes a culture of respect and collaboration where every voice matters. He encourages us to pursue professional growth opportunities, including certification, leadership development, and continuing education.

What truly sets Matt apart is his genuine compassion. He ensures that decisions are made with both the patient and the nurse in mind. His calm presence and intentional communication set the tone for the entire unit, fostering trust, teamwork, and compassion at every level.

Matt embodies the heart of nursing leadership, including compassion, courage, communication, and advocacy. He inspires excellence not through authority, but through example. For these reasons and many more, I am honored to nominate him for the DAISY Nurse Leader Award.
