D was 41, young, and shouldn't have had to go through what he did, but his family and I will forever be grateful for Amanda's kindness, strength, and amazing support through the worst 36 hours I have ever had to endure in my life.
My fiancé, D, was admitted to the MICU from the ED. After visiting hours were over, Amanda worked with the doctors to allow me to stay the night with him. He had a short but aggressive battle with cancer, and she understood I wouldn't be leaving his side. She checked in frequently throughout the night and came quickly when I had to press the nurse button.

D had a B-PAP and was difficult to understand. He would get very uncomfortable, and it came to a point where only Amanda could understand what adjustments needed to be made so he was at ease. She also gave us a quilted blanket from a local organization for comfort. He was able to hang on until Amanda's next shift the following night, and I am so grateful he did. She was not only concerned with D's comfort and care, but she was also concerned with mine. I hadn't left D's side for over 24 hours; I didn't want to eat or drink. She convinced me to go with her to get some food. I was reluctant, but D's friend was there with him, and she introduced me to another nurse (he was also fantastic), and he assured me that he would not be far from D's room if anything happened.

Amanda was diligent with his pain medication and talked with me to calm my nerves. When D's time unfortunately came that evening, Amanda was in the room with us. She treated him with dignity and respect, and me with comfort and empathy. She stayed with him while I called our families, collected the nurses to do their tradition of story sharing about D, and let us stay as long as we needed to. D was 41, young, and shouldn't have had to go through what he did, but his family and I will forever be grateful for Amanda's kindness, strength, and amazing support through the worst 36 hours I have ever had to endure in my life. I hope Amanda knows how much her ethic means to her patients and their families. Thank you.
