I would like to recognize Mike for the extraordinary compassion and dignity he showed to one of our long-term patients whose family was not there during withdrawal of care. After caring for her for months, he made sure she was not alone in the end, sitting by her side and holding her hand until she passed peacefully and comfortably. Even after her passing, Mike shed tears for her honoring her life with such humanity and respect. Despite this moment, Mike returned to the unit and continued supporting the team with grace. It’s not uncommon for nurses to become desensitized to the death we see, and his actions remind us all what it means to truly care. He gave her peace, presence, and a dignified passing. Mike is an amazing nurse, and a reminder nursing is more than a profession, but a privilege to be with someone at their most vulnerable moment.
