She’s the “tool carrier,” the teacher of clever ER hacks, and the nurse you always want by your side during a code or trauma.
I would like to nominate Lisa Barber for the DAISY Award. She is the calm in the midst of chaos. Though she often jokes that she’s the world’s “okayest nurse”, that couldn’t be further from the truth. She is the steady protector when patients become belligerent, the one who steps forward without hesitation to ensure everyone’s safety. She’s the “tool carrier,” the teacher of clever ER hacks, and the nurse you always want by your side during a code or trauma. Lisa has a natural gift for calming children and is the “go-to” person for pediatric procedures – walking new staff through every step with patience and confidence.

Recently, I worked an extended shift with Lisa while she was the charge nurse. We received word that a devastating pediatric code was en route. Immediately, she took charge – preparing the room, assigning roles, and ensuring every detail was in place. Throughout the entire hour-long resuscitation effort, she remained composed and focused, guiding the team with calm direction and compassion. Lisa checked on each of us frequently to make sure we were coping emotionally, even in the midst of the crisis. The way she spoke to and cared for the infant was nothing short of remarkable. Her tenderness and respect for that baby demonstrated the depth of her compassion. When the code ended, she gently wrapped the baby in a blanket and held the baby with love and dignity while the team completed the necessary tasks.

Even after such an emotional event, Lisa immediately resumed her charge responsibilities – managing transfers, assisting with sick patients, and continuing to support every team member. She checked on each of us multiple times throughout the day, never wavering in her leadership or kindness. This nurse exemplified what it means to be a nurse – compassionate, strong, humble, and deeply dedicated to her patients and her team. We learn from her every single day, and I can think of no one more deserving of the DAISY Award.

**This is Lisa's 3rd DAISY Award!
