Maya has a special gift for calming people down during stressful situations and making meaningful connections with patients and family members. I have witnessed this many times while she was in clinical in the Emergency Department. One time in particular stands out to me. An elderly patient suffered substantial injuries that would no doubt be life-changing for her. She was very uncomfortable, despite the medical treatments that were provided. Maya stayed with this patient most of the day, talking with her to help provide comfort through distraction, discussing her wishes, and building a trusting relationship. When the patient's family arrived, she provided them with updates on the plan of care and facilitated meaningful discussions. She advocated on behalf of the patient for more comfort measures. The patient and her family were so thankful for her care- and even sought me out to tell me how wonderful Maya was with the difficult situation. Great job, Maya!
