Hiram Rodriguez is the true definition of compassion in nursing. He has a heart of gold and consistently goes above and beyond for his patients and their families. His kindness and generosity recently shone through in a way that touched everyone who heard about it.

While caring for one of our highest acuity patients, Hiram noticed the patient’s mother quietly sitting by her son’s bedside, exhausted and worried, but never asking for anything. He realized she hadn’t eaten all day and didn’t have money to buy food. Without hesitation, Hiram bought her a meal and later even gave her his own lunch so she wouldn’t go hungry. His selflessness and empathy were unwavering, even after long demanding shifts.

In the midst of her grief and worry, this mother finally opened up to Hiram, something she hadn’t done with anyone else. She shared her fears about how she would care for her son’s body after he passed. Through his gentle reassurance and compassion, she broke down in tears and hugged him, finding comfort in his presence.

Hiram’s generosity didn’t stop there. When he happened to win a small lottery prize, he immediately thought of her again and gave her his winnings. That simple, selfless act captured who Hiram truly is: someone who gives from his heart without ever expecting anything in return. Hiram’s compassion, empathy, and kindness are a light to all of us. He not only provides exceptional clinical care but also brings hope, humanity, and love into some of the most painful moments a family can experience. He reminds us all why we became caregivers in the first place.
