I am forever grateful that Brooke was there that day and for the guidance and support she provided me during this most difficult time.
My husband was involved in a cycling accident. He was awake at the scene but badly injured. He was taken to the Sinai emergency trauma department. When I arrived with my brother-in-law, we were quickly swept into a room and told that my husband did not make it. It was a difficult adjustment going from talking to him at the scene to hearing about his untimely death. He was only 38 years old, and we have four young children, ages 8, 10, 12, and 13.

Brooke was the nurse in the room with him when we were able to go and see him. Other nurses were also available, but the situation was a difficult one, and it wasn't lost on me that some, understandably, had to leave the room because of the emotional situation. However, Brooke was my rock. When I asked her for resources for how to help tell our children about their amazing father's death, she made sure I had handouts and resources for their multiple ages. I asked her if I could tell her about my husband, and she said, "Of course! But I'm going to pull up a chair for this!" She listened intently and compassionately as I told her our story.

I told how we were high school sweethearts, how we got married at 19, and just celebrated 19 years of marriage, and about our adventures while he was serving in the Navy. We have spent more time together as a couple than we have been apart. I told her about our kids and how great a dad he was. I told her about his tattoos, and she said, “They are really cool.” I told her that he would have loved to hear that. I told her about his big personality and his love for life, and she stayed and listened. She gave me the attention and care that I needed in that moment. She let me stay with my husband for as long as possible.

Any ask I had, she was quick to comply with. From seeing his hands to getting him a new blanket before his parents arrived. While I'm sure the situation was just as emotional for her, her kindness and care for both my husband and me were not overlooked that day. When I think back on what was the most terrible day of my life, she is a shining spot of light and care. It is evident that even in the tough moments of nursing, Brooke cares for her patients and for their families. I am forever grateful that Brooke was there that day and for the guidance and support she provided me during this most difficult time.
