Thanks to her thoughtful actions, the patient passed away peacefully, and the family was able to complete their essential rituals in a setting that respected their beliefs.
Frances Hennessy is so deserving of this recognition for the exceptional compassion and cultural sensitivity she demonstrated as a Charge Nurse while attending to a very sick patient with a poor prognosis. Throughout the patient's stay, the family struggled to accept the reality of the situation, and emotions were understandably high. Frances consistently checked on both the patient and the family at the bedside, not just from a clinical standpoint, but with a deeply empathetic approach. She offered quiet support, answered challenging questions patiently, and ensured the family felt seen and heard at every stage of this difficult journey.
When the patient transitioned to comfort care, the family shared that they had a meaningful end-of-life ritual they hoped to perform and asked if it would be possible to move the patient to a room with a large window. At that time, only one room in the unit was available, and it had a small window. Despite the limitation, Frances made it a priority to honor the family's request. She re-arranged room assignments and collaborated with the team to secure a room that would allow the family to carry out their cultural rituals with peace and dignity. Thanks to her thoughtful actions, the patient passed away peacefully, and the family was able to complete their essential rituals in a setting that respected their beliefs. The family was incredibly emotional and grateful for the accommodations and the compassionate care they received.
Frances went above and beyond to ensure that culturally sensitive, patient and family-centered care was provided. She truly exemplifies Sutter Health's core values of compassion and inclusivity. Frances is the kind of nurse who makes a lasting difference, not just in moments of crisis, but every single day.
Thank you for all you do, Frances, and continue to do for the patients at Alta Bates Summit Medical, putting patients first and people always!
