When I think of the DAISY Award, Tonika immediately comes to mind. She is the epitome of a nurse and patient advocate. Tonika is never afraid to stand up for what is right—whether that means addressing a physician, family member, or even a patient—always with the patient’s best interest at heart. Tonika consistently goes above and beyond, not only for her patients but also for her colleagues. She has saved me from making mistakes and has stepped in to support me and others countless times. She is quick to stand up in unfair situations and never hesitates to lend a hand when someone is struggling.

Recently, I was overwhelmed during a shift when multiple patients had complex needs at the same time. Tonika noticed and immediately stepped in. One of my patients was being discharged but required a critical heart medication that needed prior authorization from insurance. While this is typically a case management responsibility, Tonika took the initiative to call the insurance company, provide the medication details, and follow through with cardiology, the attending physician, case management, and even the pharmacy to explore alternatives. When the insurance company said it would take 72 hours to authorize, Tonika personally educated the patient on the importance of the medication, reassured him, and ultimately helped arrange for him to obtain it out of pocket so his care would not be delayed. She even completed his discharge paperwork—all while training another staff member that day.

What stood out most was that Tonika wasn’t only advocating for the patient, but also for me. I overheard her telling the insurance representative, “She’s drowning, and no one seems to be taking this seriously.” In that moment, she was lifting both the patient and me up. That is simply who Tonika is—she cannot watch someone struggle without stepping in to help. Tonika exemplifies every quality the DAISY Award was created to honor: clinical excellence, patient advocacy, teamwork, and compassion. She is truly a blessing to work alongside.
