In a healthcare world that can at times feel hurried and impersonal, Renald Claudio, RN, reminded me that healing begins with kindness.
Healing begins with Kindness.
In July of this year, I faced a deeply distressing situation, struggling with a medical issue that left me feeling anxious and vulnerable. Following the guidance of the Nurse Advice Department, I was connected to the Kaiser Permanente Ontario Emergency Department by phone, where I had the privilege of speaking with one of the RNs in the department.
From the very first interaction, Renald displayed warmth, empathy, and professionalism. He listened with genuine attentiveness, reassured me with calm and compassionate words, and made every effort to resolve my issue over the phone. When it became evident that in-person care was necessary, he went beyond simply advising me over the phone to encouraging me to come in and be seen in person — he even promised to personally assist me. That single commitment brought an immeasurable sense of comfort and trust during an otherwise overwhelming moment.
Upon my arrival, I was met with efficiency and kindness. When I mentioned Renald’s name, I was immediately escorted to a room where he was waiting, exactly as promised. In that instant, I felt seen—not merely as a patient, but as a person worthy of dignity, compassion, and individualized care.
Throughout my entire visit, Renald never left my side. His calm demeanor and gentle approach provided a sense of safety and reassurance. He addressed my medical needs with skill and precision while patiently educating me on how to properly connect the tubing. He ensured I understood each step and provided all necessary supplies for home care—going above and beyond to prevent future complications and to restore my confidence.
What truly sets Renald apart is not only his clinical expertise but also the humanity with which he delivers care. He embodies the very essence of nursing—compassionate, selfless, and unwaveringly dedicated to his patients. In a healthcare world that can at times feel hurried and impersonal, Renald Claudio, RN, reminded me that healing begins with kindness.
I am pleased to nominate him for the DAISY Award, as I believe that he exemplifies the spirit of extraordinary nursing and serves as a role model of excellence for all nurses.
