Lilah's quick observations, excellent listening, and nursing skills gave this patient a positive outcome.
Lilah was admitting a patient who was scheduled for a left carotid endarterectomy. The patient had her right carotid endarterectomy done one month prior. Lilah was very diligent in her pre-op op assessment and very attentive to the patient and the family. The patient's daughter noted that the patient's right eye looked different; something was not right with it. Lilah noticed the patient was slurring a little. Lilah immediately completed a thorough neuro check, and no deficits were noted. Lilah noticed a very slight facial droop and called in to the OR room to the doctor to find out if any of these symptoms existed prior to admission.
Lilah was told do not worry, we will check when we get done with current case. The OR nurse quickly called back and said to call a RATT call. The patient then started to complain of numbness in the right upper lip, which was a new symptom. Lilah thoroughly explained to the family what was happening. Lilah put the patient on a monitor. The RATT nurse arrived and called stroke alert. The patient was transported to CT right away. Stroke Alert was called in the CT scan. ER staff come to CT and Thrombolytic given. Lilah stayed with the patient the entire time, comforting her and serving as a familiar face. Lilah's quick observations, excellent listening, and nursing skills gave this patient a positive outcome.
