Cathy’s care exemplifies what it means to go beyond routine nursing duties.
I am proud to nominate Cathy for the DAISY Award in recognition of her exceptional nursing care that truly went above and beyond to change the course of a patient’s recovery. This male patient on 9E had undergone multiple Foley catheter insertions and removals due to acute urinary retention. Facing language barriers, no insurance, no caregiver support, and limited follow-up resources, he was at high risk of being discharged with an indwelling catheter — a scenario that many would have accepted as inevitable, given the complexity, but not optimal for his safety.

What sets Cathy apart is that she refused to settle for the easy path. While others may have prepared for catheter reinsertion or discharge with the catheter in place, Cathy took extra time and effort. During a voiding trial, she carefully observed subtle signs that the patient could urinate with proper prompting. She used interpreter services to communicate clearly, patiently coached him through multiple attempts, and provided consistent encouragement — staying by his side and adjusting her approach as needed. Thanks to Cathy’s relentless dedication and clinical insight, the patient successfully passed his voiding trial. He avoided another catheter insertion, reducing his risk of infection and avoiding a longer hospital stay or complications. More importantly, Cathy preserved his dignity and independence.

Cathy’s care exemplifies what it means to go beyond routine nursing duties — she sees the possibilities others might miss and commits fully to making them happen. Her persistence and compassion had a direct, positive impact on this patient’s outcome and makes her a true DAISY Nurse.
