Years ago, I had the privilege to work with Sarah, who was a Student Nurse Intern at the time. Her cheerful demeanor and experience were invaluable to me during my initial year as a new graduate nurse. I don’t know how I would have survived without her. Over the years, I have watched her grow into an exceptional nurse leader. Sarah’s clinical skill and knowledge provide an essential resource to the night shift, ensuring that new nurses feel supported and guided. Sarah is instrumental in pushing forward new, important initiatives, as well as educating and holding staff accountable to hospital policies and procedures. She creates a positive work environment by providing reassurance, lifting spirits, and increasing confidence amongst the night shift staff who are most vulnerable to a lack of resources. Recently, a new graduate nurse remarked, “I was crying, and sometimes as new grads, we just need to feel heard. Sarah was able to validate me when that’s what I needed most.” Sarah is always willing to help and is the first to jump in to help by answering call lights, assisting with medication passes, and ADLs. Sarah provides compassionate care not only to her patients, but to the nursing staff she supports each night tirelessly.
