In the ICU, Michael always provides patients with extraordinary care that is thoughtful and personal. When he was getting his initial bedside shift report on a patient, he realized that he knew them from a local disc golf league. During the patient’s stay in the ICU, they talked frequently about different courses and discs that were their favorite. At one point, he even brought a disc so the patient could have something to keep his hands busy. As the patient continued to get better, Michael had the great idea to bring his portable disc golf basket and throwing discs to surprise the patient with a game. Michael took the patient on a walk towards the garden area of the hospital, where he had secretly set up the disc golf basket. When the patient turned the corner and saw the basket, he was ecstatic. He expressed through much emotion how excited he was. The patient hollered and cheered! He couldn’t believe that Michael brought the disc golf set just for him. Michael and the patient played for over 30 minutes. During their game, the patient continually thanked Michael and wore a huge smile. This act of kindness was tailored to the patient’s needs and helped in their healing process during their stay.
Michael is a fantastic example of caring for each individual patient. His one-of-a-kind approach to bringing some fun into his patients' stay has impacted the lives of so many patients. Whether it’s telling jokes, sharing funny stories, or throwing a frisbee, his patients feel valued and cared for. Michael’s dedication to uplifting those he cares for and those he works with brings a profound impact on everyone around him. I admire Michael and his great example of caring for each patient and his unique gift to make others smile.
