My grandpa Bill was admitted with shortness of breath and just generally not doing well. He is an HF patient, so things were a little scary. He was transferred to the PCU for closer monitoring, where we met Grace. I am also a PCU nurse at another hospital, and I can honestly say Grace is the type of nurse I would pick over and over again to take care of any of my family members. She took the time to thoroughly explain everything, like a family member, not just a professional. Grandpa had 3 rapid responses called on him overnight, so Grace was keeping such a close eye on him. She was honest with us in saying that she, too, was worried about him. Her love for her patients shines through as she treats each patient like she would treat her own family. When my grandpa started to have increasing oxygen requirements, hypotension, and things looked like they might be going in an unwanted direction, she immediately jumped into action, paging doctors to come to the bedside. Her advocacy for her patients is unmatched. She facilitated grandpa’s transfer to the ICU- a higher level of care he desperately needed to proactively treat him. Grace displays both the art and science of nursing- incredible intelligence and genuine compassion for patients and their families. She is an excellent example of what a DAISY-awarded nurse is, and what all nurses should strive to be. Our family can never thank her enough.
