In hopes of highlighting some of the incredible but unseen work done by our nightshift teammates. Rebecca consistently demonstrates the VA ICARE principles as she serves our Veterans and is a wonderful mentor, friend, and coworker.

Integrity, Commitment:

A recent encounter with Rebecca involved caring for a very vulnerable patient who was struggling with sundowning. The Veteran was fearful of fire in her bedroom and was confused and anxious. Rebecca remained calm and met the Veteran on her level, working to build up trust. It is amazing to witness the finesse of comforting someone who is really struggling, while remaining honest and respectful. When a tactic wasn’t working, she adjusted and tried a different approach to communication. She dedicated her time and full attention to the Veteran, rather than brushing off her concerns.

Advocacy, Respect:

She worked patiently to explain the importance of medication, ensuring the Veteran felt informed and empowered rather than pressured. Her ability to meet the Veteran at her level of understanding, while respecting her autonomy, is a powerful example of advocacy in action. The Veteran was very hesitant to take medications but relied on the trust and comfort she had in Rebecca to brave something she was scared to do.

Excellence:

Nursing is an art, and Rebecca uses her experience and kind heart to wield her paintbrush, bringing beauty to the work we do. Not only is she an advocate for our Veterans, but she is also unyieldingly supportive of her coworkers- always ready to lend a hand. She exemplifies a teamwork mindset; there are not “my” patients versus “your” patients- there are only “our” patients. Rebecca is the kind of nurse who makes everyone around her better. I am always grateful to have her on my team. She is a powerful reminder of the difference one person can make.
