Her eyes filled with tears as she continued to advocate passionately for further support, making sure every option was explored.
I would like to nominate Niketa for her exceptional compassion, dedication, and advocacy during a recent shift with one of our long-term patients, Mr. C. Mr. C is an 80-year-old gentleman who is well-known to our unit. A devoted father who raised a successful lawyer, he unfortunately doesn't receive many visitors and often struggles with feelings of loneliness. He frequently calls out for help, not because he always needs medical assistance, but because he doesn't want to be alone. His longing for connection is so strong that he'll sometimes pretend to need help just to have someone nearby. One night, Mr. C began pooling blood from his catheter. Without hesitation, Niketa jumped into action. She called a rapid response, cleaned him up, and stayed by his side, calmly reassuring him as he asked, “What's happening to me?” Despite an eventual determination from urology that no additional interventions were needed after catheter irrigation, Niketa remained visibly moved by his distress. Her eyes filled with tears as she continued to advocate passionately for further support, making sure every option was explored. Later that evening, as she returned to check on him, Mr. C held her hand and asked, “Why am I bleeding like this?” Niketa gently reassured him, explaining that she was in active communication with the physician and that a plan was being formulated. As she turned to leave, Mr. C clung to her hand and pleaded, “Please don't go.” Niketa's response exemplified the heart of nursing. She smiled and said, Okay, Mr. C. Let me get a computer, and I’ll be right back to sit with you. She returned with a Workstation on Wheels and spent the rest of the night at his bedside, charting and caring, all while holding his hand and providing the comfort he so deeply needed. Niketa demonstrated not only clinical competence but also profound empathy. She treated Mr. C with the dignity, humanity, and presence that every patient deserves. Her actions that night were the true embodiment of what it means to be a nurse.
