Shantel Holt is a nurse on T9, which, if you don’t know, specializes in oncology as well as caring for hospice patients. She’s truly one of our most compassionate nurses and goes above and beyond for her patients. She recently had a patient who was a young girl in her 20s who, unfortunately, got the news that her cancer was terminal.
The day she received that news, Shantel talked with the patient and her mother and found out that they had been trying to reach out to Make-A-Wish Foundation and other charities. The patient really wanted to get her nails done to “feel beautiful and like a princess one more time.” Shantel spent all night reaching out to nail techs to find someone willing to come into the hospital to do the patients' nails.
Not only did Shantel accomplish this, but she also arranged for the nail tech to come the very same day. She was able to bring so much joy to her patient and her patient's mother while they were struggling with some of the worst news anyone could face. Because of her actions while caring for her patient, she was able to provide them with some joy and distraction as they struggled with terrible news. It really reminded me how much healthcare workers can impact our patients' lives.
