In my first visit to Mayo as the son of a patient in the ICU, we encountered a number of staff who did their job well, and it was nice to see how much Mayo cares about its patients. However, Tiffany has stood out so much that I was propelled to take the time to send this in as a way to say thank you for doing your job at a level above the rest.
Tiffany is thorough, detailed, and efficient in her job, and that was great, but two things I think set her apart. One is her communication with the patient and their family. Every step of the way, she took time to talk with us and fill us in on what was happening in a caring way. Two, she cared about all of us. Not just my dad, but also his wife and I. Many staff members won't seek to engage an entire family going through the toughest days of their lives, but Tiffany did.
She paid close attention to cleanliness, and her care of my dad made us feel safe enough to get meals and rest, knowing he was in great hands. My favorite and most emotional time came after my dad was extubated and able to sit up My dad, who had not shaved in a week, was having some irritation from the facial hair. Tiffany found a razor and other needed supplies so I could shave my dad. This provided him with comfort and a piece of dignity in what had been a nightmare of a week.
Her humanity changed our experience.
