Rachel, along with another nurse, Tammy, received a patient into the recovery room with an oral airway in place and in respiratory distress. This was an on-call Saturday emergency bowel resection. The patient's wife expressed how wonderful, helpful, and understanding Rachel and Tammy were and asked that it be passed on to the manager.
They explained every step of what was happening with the patient, including the possibility of transferring him to a higher level of care. Then, as the day progressed, weaning him off of high-flow oxygen and assisted with downgrading his acuity level, allowing him to remain at ASHL. The patient and his wife were very impressed by the collaboration that was initiated between respiratory, med/surg, the surgeon, CRNA, and the hospitalist. The communication and focus on patient safety throughout the patient's recovery stay were amazing.
Both nurses expressed empathy and caring to both the patient and his wife. The patient was grateful for the overall care he received.
