Simone is one of the hardest-working nurses I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Recently, here at the Harrell Family Center for Behavioral Wellness (HFCBW), we had a patient who self-harmed by reopening a wound. This was a significant injury that caused a lot of blood loss, and it was a shocking scene for any RN to walk into, but especially an inpatient psych RN with limited medical experience.

You would never guess that Simone has spent her entire nursing career in psych by the way she jumped right in and took control of the situation. She held pressure on the wound while simultaneously making phone calls and directing the other staff on the unit to ensure we got help for the patient immediately. In addition to this, she used her endearing personality to talk with the patient and help keep him calm while awaiting EMS to arrive at the HFCBW and transport the patient to the ED.

The patient trusted her and followed her directions to stop trying to harm himself because he could sense she was genuine, and having him cooperate with us made this dangerous situation easier to handle. Simone is truly an extraordinary nurse. She does not think she is doing anything special or going above and beyond, but the positive effect she has on her patients and the whole team here in behavioral health speaks volumes.
