This nurse cares for you well because she is trained to do so, but you feel "cared for" in so many other ways because she is passionate.
Gabrielle has been my primary nurse for the last 2 admissions. I have been here a lot over the course of 3 separate admissions. Gabrielle continues to go above and beyond each time with simple tasks to make my time here better. She knows I get anxious with my port access, and when I have her, it's always no stress. She has great time management skills, which is helpful with my long infusion times. She also has a good understanding and is detail-oriented, helping her with my complicated IV meds. The most recent admission was supposed to be 1 week for a drug trial; however, the trial wasn't going well, and we decided to stop it as my lungs were taking a hit. I have CF, and the drug was Trikafta. Through an unfortunate turn of events, I picked up a virus (most likely from my PT). and ended up very sick here for an additional week. That week turned into an additional 3 for IV antibiotics to treat a bacterial infection that developed from the virus. This meant I would now go from a planned 1-week admit to a 6-week admit that covered all the holidays. Gabi made them so special! After her shifts, she would hang out on her own time with me and play LIFE or just talk, as she could tell I was very sick and very scared. As the holidays grew closer, all the nurses made me feel at home and loved, but Gabi more so! She offered to get me food downstairs or from the outside. She even brought in a variety of mouthwash samples when the bacteria started to form because I had a horrendous taste in my mouth. On Christmas Day, she worked at night and came in early to give me a huge bag of gifts. All types of crafts that she bought because "they made me think of you," she said. A week later, on New Year's Eve, she worked, and that was also my birthday. She came in with a card that made me cry, a gift, and a beautiful cake. This nurse cares for you well because she is trained to do so, but you feel "cared for" in so many other ways because she is passionate. She makes me feel like family here, and that is so healing, maybe more so than just meds.
