Emily is a kind, selfless, and thoughtful person who gives her all every day.
Emily is the type of person and nurse who goes above and beyond in every situation she encounters.
When CCMC was established, it was decided that allergy mixing would take place in the clinic setting rather than in a pharmacy. This was a huge undertaking for the department, and Emily has spearheaded the entire process. The process includes: ordering and maintaining mixing extracts in the clinic, replacing them when expired, keeping the clinic refrigerator at the correct temperature with a temperature log, creating and maintaining a dedicated space in the clinic that meets all policy requirements, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, coordinating and documenting monthly terminal cleans of the room, and following all policies and procedures for allergy mixing. This process requires precision, time management, and careful adherence to safety protocols to ensure efficacy. Emily also keeps an up-to-date binder of all current policies and procedures, among many other responsibilities. It is essentially like running a small pharmacy within the clinic.
When I started in my role in January 2025, the allergy mixing process, being done in the clinic, was under review by senior leadership. Emily helped every step of the way to show pharmacy and administrative leadership that this process, though done outside a pharmacy setting, was still being performed with every “i” dotted and “t” crossed. She has ensured consistency and compliance for years. Leadership from both pharmacy and our Chief Nursing Supervisor and Nursing Director came to watch Emily walk them through the entire mixing process and show them the space.
Emily has helped ensure this process stays in the clinic because she truly cares about her work. This mixing process and its administration to patients are the “bread and butter” of what they do there. Emily performs this role in addition to her regular nursing duties in the clinic, all while completing her master’s degree in nursing, onboarding and training new staff, pursuing the NEXTGEN program, volunteering to mentor a nursing student for eight weeks, and more.
The provider she supports frequently reaches out to me, as her supervisor, to express his gratitude and appreciation for having Emily as his nurse in the clinic. Below is the most recent email he sent, which he kindly allowed me to share as part of her nomination:
“I would just like to recognize Emily Smith, R.N., for stepping up and essentially running the entire allergy office by herself during these days while we are short-staffed! She is phenomenal, and I am grateful to have her working with me in the clinic. I just want to let you all know how much she is doing for this clinic and giving me peace of mind to actually finish my notes on time and focus on patient care. She is truly an asset to CCMC. I am very lucky to have her in the office."
Emily is a kind, selfless, and thoughtful person who gives her all every day. I have never met anyone with a heart like hers.
