Marisa's diligence in managing the emergent situation, communicating with her fellow team members about my cardiac history, all while holding my shaking hand.
I gave birth to our beautiful M at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. With a new diagnosis of SVTs during this pregnancy, I experienced a great deal of trepidation going into the labor and delivery process. To my relief, everything went smoothly. My heart behaved, and I thought I was in the clear! Unfortunately, the following morning, I started passing large clots. My wonderful night shift nurse, M, filled in the day shift RN, Marisa what was happening. Marisa was calm and attentive as she called a code when the bleeding turned into a significant hemorrhage. Filled with hormones, anxiety, and pain, I was consoled by Marisa's diligence in managing the emergent situation, communicating with her fellow team members about my cardiac history, all while holding my shaking hand. I thought I was a goner! Being faced with my own mortality, Marisa and RN, C, holding my hands, asking me questions about my family and my life, distracted and calmed me. Marisa advocated for me with questions to ask the doctor when I was too wiped out to initiate these conversations. I would like to nominate Marisa for a DAISY Award because she went above and beyond to provide compassionate care to assure my well-being. She connected with me and my family on a personal level, and I knew I had someone to advocate for me. With 14 years of my own acute care background, I have observed wonderful moments where skilled caregivers have gone above and beyond to assure their patient came first; however, I have never been on the receiving end of this care as a patient. In my overwhelmed and anxious state, she validated my fears and provided me with positivity and hope as I processed a traumatic experience. We bonded over book clubs and classic cars! She is an excellent educator, providing feedback on infant care techniques, all while assuring I take care of myself. I am a strong believer that God places people in your path when you need them the most, and it was no coincidence that I was assigned the most wonderful caregiver when I truly was in need. From my growing family, we are so thankful for you, our angel nurse, whom we now call a friend.
