Katie is the glue that holds Dr. P's outpatient hematology team together. In the case of a very young ALL patient of his who has had various legal troubles, compliance issues, pregnancy scares, family issues, and drug abuse problems, Katie proactively reaches out to the patient when she misses her appointments to make sure she is followed semi-regularly by the team. Katie is also the only person on the team - including Dr. P - to whom the patient will fully discuss her health and social issues for us to adequately address at follow up appointments. In the case of another demanding patient of Dr. P's dealing with chronic GVHD and related pain, Katie spent in total over an hour with him over the phone and calmly addressed his pain, his GVHD, and his distress and distilled his complaints to one or two core questions for Dr. P and the team to address easily.
In a final example with another patient of Dr. P's who has come to clinic visits repeatedly with life threatening anemia and CHF and either wheelchair or gurney-bound by herself, Katie was essential in facilitating rapid responses, expediting blood transfusions, providing accurate assessments of the patient's clinical status when labs were delayed and contacting the patient's family members and dealing with them on behalf of Dr. P. In addition to all of this, Katie is always ready to help the other nurses and physicians in Hope Plaza 420 with their patient issues when asked and has even assisted with rooming patients to help the flow of the clinic. She is always communicative, observant, logical, and entirely pleasant to work with, no matter who you are or how stressful things are around her.
