I would like to thank and recognize Andrea Clement for the extraordinary care she gave to me during my recent hospitalization and ask that it be noted for the DAISY Award. It's quite unsettling and honestly scary when you know you're being admitted to the hospital for open-heart surgery. I was having a double heart bypass and an aortic valve replacement. Not an everyday activity by a long shot. Thankfully, my surgery went well due to the expertise and skill of my surgical team. I was moved to the Cardiac ICU following surgery on Wednesday and remained there until the evening on Sunday. Sunday morning, the nurse who was departing from the evening shift said that Andrea would be my nurse that day, noting that she was really smart and that she was the Nurse Educator. I was having some issues that needed to be monitored and med adjustments made to address those issues, as well as low oxygen levels. Andrea seemed to be there every time I opened my eyes, and I noticed that other nurses would address her with questions about issues that their patients were having, requesting possible solutions. This happened several times throughout her shift, and I was quite impressed with how she appeared to be the go-to person for other nurses. Toward the end of her shift, I asked if she would be there again tomorrow, hoping to have her care once again, but it appears that she had taken an extra weekend shift and would not be back until Wednesday to perform her normal Nurse Educator duties. Andrea told me that she would come and find me in the regular Cardiac Care Unit on Wednesday if I had not yet been released home. Promise made and promise kept as Andrea appeared at my bedside on Wednesday, checking up on me and wishing me a full recovery. I understand that the DAISY Award recognizes and celebrates exceptional compassionate care as well as exceptional nursing skill. Andrea Clement exemplifies these qualities and more. She made me feel special and safe under her care, as well as taking time to teach me about the traumatic ordeal that I had recently gone through. Andrea and the nursing team helped me to heal. I will be forever grateful.
