Without her advocacy, compassion, and expertise, he would have likely continued to struggle with his pain and nausea.
My fiancé injured himself by falling off a ladder while at work. He is a very medically complex patient-- a lifetime of congenital heart disease that led him to a transplant in 2022. We ended up in our usual ED. It was very busy, but his pain was severe. As his partner, I have never seen him in so much pain. Our experience was poor. We did not feel that the emergency room fellow was listening, and communication was poor. They told us to cancel our plans for the next year -- including planned lymphatic interventions and a May vacation. They told us to prepare for months of inpatient admission. Due to the nature of his injury, he was ultimately transferred to 9G at Presby. I was beside myself as I was grieving the life that we had together. The ED that we had transferred from informed us that his injuries were severe; both legs and pelvis were broken. When I met Becca, it was the following day. Again, I was distraught. I had so many questions and concerns. His pain and nausea were severe-- she took such care in advocating for more interventions. Not only this, but she listened to my prior experiences about what had worked best for him. She advocated for his further X-rays to be taken at the bedside, as he was still nauseous. She repeatedly called the pharmacy to get him proper medication. not only this... she made me feel better. Becca took the time to answer all of my questions. She explained what recovery would look like and reassured me that he would not be hospitalized for months. She was so compassionate and understanding, she made me feel like he was in good hands. Without her advocacy, compassion, and expertise, he would have likely continued to struggle with his pain and nausea. By the end of her shift, both my fiancé and I were in a much better place. I am so grateful for her compassion, care, and dedication to nursing. It embodies the spirit of the DAISY Award.
