Marie is the preceptor of choice because she loves being a nurse, and her passion for Nursing is felt by everyone around her each and every day.
It is with great pleasure that I nominate Marie Ferrier for the DAISY Award, in recognition of her clinical excellence, extraordinary compassion, and unwavering dedication that she consistently demonstrates every day. As a Nurse Educator, I have had the privilege of working collaboratively, teaching, mentoring, and observing many nurses in their work, but Marie Ferrier stands out in the most exceptional way. My first experience with Marie started a year ago in my first week as the educator of T8. I was tasked with the responsibility of finding a qualified preceptor for my orientee, which turned out to be more difficult than I anticipated. I needed someone who was knowledgeable, patient, caring, compassionate, a role model, and most importantly, willing to serve in this critical role. At the time, there were very few nurses who were willing. After being turned down by every other qualified nurse, Marie was the only nurse who was willing to step up to the plate and precept this novice Nurse. I am happy to say that since that time, Marie has continued to teach, mentor, and successfully onboarded more than 3 novice Nurses, who are now her colleagues. Marie is the preceptor of choice because she loves being a nurse, and her passion for Nursing is felt by everyone around her each and every day. As a lifelong learner herself, Marie lives and loves to impart the knowledge that she has to the next generation. She embraces evidence-based practice and attends classes often to increase her knowledge. I’ll never forget when Marie came back from a two-day EKG course. She was so proud to say, “You know I learned about SVT the other day, and guess what happened to me? While doing telemonitoring, I was able to identify the SVT rhythm and save a life”. Marie is a role model both in clinical skill and professional integrity. She is meticulous in her assessments, proactive in escalating concerns, and consistently advocates fiercely for patient safety. New nurses gravitate to Marie for guidance, knowing they will receive clinical insight, encouragement, and support. Recently, during a Joint Commission survey, Marie Ferrier stopped the administration of blood products when the patient's DOB printed on the transfusion record did not match the DOB printed on the patient’s ID band. Marie’s attentiveness not only saved a patient’s life but validated to our surveyors that we provide exceptional, safe care and are committed to living out our values of “do no harm”. When it comes to change, Marie is an early adopter and strives to maintain a positive attitude even when placed in challenging circumstances. These examples merely provide a snapshot of Marie’s intelligence, compassion, and commitment to patient care. Today, I can say, our patients are safer, our team is stronger, and our workplace is brighter because of Marie Ferrier. She truly embodies the spirit of the DAISY Award—delivering exceptional care, not just through her hands, but through her heart.
