Janet made me feel seen, cared for, and supported, and gave me the reassurance I needed as a first-time mom, reminding us that everything will be okay even if it isn’t perfect.
As a first-time mom, childbirth was scary enough. After a traumatic delivery for me and the baby, the afterglow was even scarier. Janet was our postpartum nurse for night 1 and night 2, and I am convinced she is a literal angel. Janet went above and beyond to ensure the baby and I had everything we needed while adjusting. With nerve pain in my back, stitches on my bottom, and sore, achy muscles everywhere, it was so hard to move around and be everything baby needed.

I was initially set on breastfeeding, but when the baby couldn’t get the hang of it, Janet reassured me and helped me understand that ‘fed is best’ and how I feed our baby doesn’t make me any less of a mother. She stayed with me to ensure I knew how to feed, burp, and love my baby.

What stood out to me was when it was 3 am and the baby and husband were sleeping great. I was so exhausted, in pain, and emotional at the same time. Janet walked in to check on us and found me crying in the dark. She comforted me and held my hand through everything I was feeling at the time.

Night 2, the baby would not settle down, no matter what we did. Janet again walked in to a baby crying, mom crying, and a frazzled new dad, all doing our best. She offered to take our baby to the nursery for a few hours so we could get some rest, which we gratefully accepted. Janet came back 3 hours later with a rested, fed, changed, and content baby, and my husband and I were able to rest, recharge, and were ready to try again. Towards the end of Janet's shift, she came in to say goodbye, and I cried when she left the room. I wish we could have put her in our pockets and taken her home with us. Janet made me feel seen, cared for, and supported, and gave me the reassurance I needed as a first-time mom, reminding us that everything will be okay even if it isn’t perfect.

I will forever be grateful for the 24 hours Janet cared for me and my new baby. I hope she gets to read this and know that she is exactly the type of person that new mothers and babies need, and that she is exactly where she is meant to be.
