My 62-year-old mother-in-law collapsed at work and was taken via EMS to a local hospital. Those first few hours were challenging. The moment we were informed that she would be flown to GMH as a Code Stroke, I felt an immense sense of relief. From the moment we arrived in the Neuro ICU, where the team immediately recognized that we were there for her, to the moment she was discharged from the med/surg stroke unit, we were surrounded by care teams who exemplify true dedication. It was evident that they are in this profession for all the right reasons.

Cami Hughes stood out in a major way. She was calm, reassuring, but equally very serious about her role as an ICU RN. She asked us inquisitive questions to build off of what she was able to gather prior to our arrival, as my mother-in-law flew in via helicopter, while we drove from another county. We did not know what to expect when we arrived, and Cami's warmness immediately helped stop the flow of adrenaline for all three of us. It was like we knew her for years, but we had only just met. She truly cared for us as family members while also caring for her as a patient.

When we returned the next day to see her there, we were thrilled. My mother-in-law continued to struggle with cognitive delays, but she knew Cami's name because of how present she was. Cami translated for us to know what was going on and provided her with the dignity and patience that is needed for someone with a new-onset stroke and seizures. Once she was able to have oral intake again, Cami made sure she had her beloved warm coffee, which meant a lot! Cami played a crucial role in my mother-in-law's recovery, and her efforts made a significant difference during a very difficult time for our family. Her dedication, expertise, and kindness did not go unnoticed and will be remembered by us always. Her commitment to her patients is truly inspiring.
