She was the calm in the storm.
I was initially admitted overnight to L&D, where I did not have the most positive welcoming/care from my night RN. The following day at 7 am, our nurse, Sarah, was a breath of fresh air. She was so kind and immediately took the time to listen, observe, and educate. She provided not only me but also my husband with constant care. She made sure he rested and got a bite to eat. When there was confusion or a lack of communication from the medical team, she was quick to advocate for me. I was not an easy patient, and she never let that show. She kindly but firmly let the doctors know when they made an error in a very heated environment. She was the calm in the storm. After a very long shift, she stayed to accompany us to the OR for my emergent C-section. My husband and I were obviously frightened in this moment. She gently walked my husband down to the OR and helped him gown up, all while walking him through the process to help calm his nerves. She then did the same for me by staying by my side until our little girl was in my arms. She doesn't know it, but Sarah made a difference that day. If she had not advocated for me so strongly, I am not sure how our story would have ended. After spending that day with her, I know that she shows up for her patients every day. She is what every nurse should be. Thank you, Sarah, for providing exceptional care to first-time parents who were scared beyond belief. We are so grateful to you!
