Grace's actions reflected a high level of clinical readiness, maturity, and dedication to patient care.
During one of her women’s and infants’ clinical nursing rotations, Grace was assigned to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for an observational experience focused on the care of high-risk neonates. During her time in the unit, a premature infant—delivered at home at 32 weeks of gestation—was transferred into the NICU, requiring immediate resuscitation and stabilization.

Despite this being her first time in the NICU and her role as a student observer, Grace responded with remarkable initiative and professionalism. When the nurse she was shadowing was called to assist in the resuscitation, Grace accompanied her without hesitation and promptly offered assistance in any capacity. Recognizing Grace’s attentiveness and eagerness to contribute, the nurse assigned her with recording the sequence of resuscitation efforts, medications administered, and corresponding times.

Grace performed this responsibility with care and composure, accurately documenting critical interventions in real-time—an essential responsibility in the high-stakes environment of neonatal intensive care. Her ability to remain calm, focused, and effective, despite limited prior exposure to such settings, was commendable.

Throughout the event, Grace demonstrated professionalism, situational awareness, and a clear understanding of her scope as a student nurse. Her contributions were not only appropriate and safe, but they also supported the multidisciplinary team’s efforts, ultimately aiding in the successful stabilization of the neonate. Grace's actions reflected a high level of clinical readiness, maturity, and dedication to patient care.
