This nurse had to do a lot of coordination and encouragement to get the patient to go, but was able to get this patient to a shower to "feel brand new" and lift her spirits.
This nurse is knowledgeable, dependable, and a great coworker. She is a great charge nurse and helps with anything that is needed. She is the first to step in whenever there is a need. She precepts new nurses and does a great job mentoring new staff. She is part of the UBC and contributes to unit projects. She has great ideas to improve working conditions for staff and the care of our patients. To add to all of this, this nurse goes above and beyond the call of duty.
We have had a patient in our unit for some time. Things have not gone smoothly for this patient. Not to anyone's fault, but just one of those things that happen that makes a patient's stay a tough one. This patient and her husband are anxious, they are frustrated, and struggling. The patient has had some pretty down days and has become hard to encourage. This nurse was the nurse who was bound and determined to get this patient a shower. We do not have showers in our rooms. Our patients have wipes for bathing, which is great, most of the time. With this patient, her mood was quite down, and everyone knows a good, warm shower and hair wash can be a realĀ game changer. This nurse had to do a lot of coordination and encouragement to get the patient to go, but was able to get this patient to a shower to "feel brand new" and lift her spirits. This patient was also a birdwatcher. Being stuck in the hospital for days can be daunting. It just so happened that a vendor dropped off some "goodies". In this box of goodies were colorful paper birds. It must have been kismet, because we were laughing that these were the weirdest "goodies" to ever get, but really the best, because this nurse came up with the idea to hang the paper birds in the patient's room. It improved the patient's mood and gave her something to enjoy and look at besides the norm of a hospital room.
This nurse is kind, compassionate, and caring. She is extraordinary and exemplifies the meaning of DAISY.
