She was scared, but Lauren’s kindness and professionalism reassured her that everything possible was being done.
I would like to nominate Lauren Smith for the DAISY Award. Lauren consistently shows up to work with dedication and a strong sense of purpose, always willing to work hard to care for our veterans. She is kind, compassionate, skilled, and has highly knowledgeable qualities that clearly shine through in the care she provides, often resulting in outstanding patient outcomes.
This week, Lauren cared for a veteran whose symptoms were waxing and waning, with an uncertain condition and outcome. Throughout this high-risk situation, Lauren demonstrated exceptional clinical judgment and calmness under pressure. She administered a high-risk medication with precise attention to detail, ensuring the veteran received the correct dose at the right time. Her quick thinking and vigilance kept her ahead of the patient’s rapidly changing condition.
What stood out most, however, was the compassionate way she engaged with the veteran’s family. His granddaughter stopped me in the hallway to thank us, specifically singling out Lauren’s care. Despite the intensity of the moment in the room, Lauren’s ongoing updates and calm demeanor gave the granddaughter a sense of peace. She shared how deeply she loved her grandfather. She expressed how he had raised her and been there for her when her parents could not. She was scared, but Lauren’s kindness and professionalism reassured her that everything possible was being done.
Lauren’s excellence isn’t limited to her patient interactions. She is consistently praised by her peers, especially when in charge. She actively identifies and addresses safety concerns, always following through to ensure that both patients and staff are supported and safe. Her commitment to going the extra mile every single day does not go unnoticed.
Lauren Smith exemplifies what it means to be a nurse and a DAISY Award Honoree.
