She continually shows up, dives in, and gives her all to her patients and the department, in whatever capacity is needed.
Recently, Cindy was involved in the care of a young patient who sustained a GSW to his chest. The patient came in awake, oriented, and terrified. Despite our best efforts, he rapidly declined and became unresponsive. He was quickly rushed to the OR, where resuscitative efforts continued. Part of that resuscitation included MTP, and lots of it. The patient required over 70 units of blood product and extensive surgical repairs. Even with these measures, he remained unstable and required transfer to the HVIC for ECMO. By the time he was transferred to HVIC, it was more than 2 hours past Cindy’s shift. At no point did she complain, ask where her relief was, or attempt to pass off her duties. She remained dedicated to the well-being of her patient. Because of her and the rest of the team’s actions, that patient WALKED out of the hospital, completely alert and oriented, without significant deficits, less than a month later. It would be easy for anyone with nearly 40 years in this department to become jaded or disengaged, but Cindy is neither. She continually shows up, dives in, and gives her all to her patients and the department, in whatever capacity is needed. She is a staple in the department. Our community and staff are better because of her.
