Shawana constantly encourages me to keep going, to grow, and to believe in myself. She is a kind of leader who makes you feel seen, valued, and capable of more.
I would like to nominate Shawana Dean, assistant nurse manager on the SCI unit for the DAISY Award in recognition of her extraordinary leadership, compassion, and support, not only for our patients but for every member of our team. Shawana has been a steady source of strength and guidance, especially during the care of a young complex rehab patient with a traumatic brain injury. This patient frequently exhibited agitation, confusion, and impulsive behaviors that required close 1:1 care. Shawana was consistently by my side as I provided care for him-checking in frequently and ensuring I never felt alone in what was often an emotionally and physically challenging situation. But Shawana's leadership goes far beyond any one moment. She truly supports her staff on the SCI unit in every way. No matter how busy she is, she takes time to check in, offer words of support, or jump in when help is needed. What makes Shawana's support even more meaningful to me is knowing where she started-she began working at the VA as an aide on CLC and worked her way up to her current role as Assistant Nurse Manager. Her journey is inspiring. She uses her experience to connect with us all on our unit in such a genuine and humble way. Shawana constantly encourages me to keep going, to grow, and to believe in myself. She is a kind of leader who makes you feel seen, valued, and capable of more. Shawana truly exemplifies what the DAISY Award represents-compassion, dedication and excellence in nursing. With heartfelt gratitude.
