She washes their clothes, buys them clothes, and shoes as the circumstances present themselves.
Emily Haas, RN, BSN, CMSRN, CNS, and 5 Tower Nurse Educator. She began her nursing career here, on 5Tower. I remember when she came, so full of enthusiasm and solid nursing knowledge but lacking in practical experience. She wanted to know everything, see everything, experience everything, and do everything; 6 years later, she is an amazing nurse!

A leader, an organizer, and a mentor. Her commitment to Atrium's "Excellence in Nursing" is her ultimate goal, and she accomplishes this in several ways. She models a love of learning through her actions. She continues the facilitation and coordination of the Head and Neck class for the advancement of our newer staff. She promotes and maintains the continuing education for all of our staff.

She presents the Clinical changes at huddle; through our education boards throughout the unit, and she is a present resource for all of us to help with a smooth transition from old to new information. She encourages staff to reach out beyond their bedside duties, to take on active roles within the units' Shared Governance, Preceptor roles, and to engage in their own love of lifelong learning.

As I stated before, she is a Mentor to all of the new hires and new grads. She makes it a priority to meet with them regularly to establish clear outcomes, so they are clear on expectations. She created a system that allows her to track each nurse, to know exactly where they are in their onboarding process. She has funny, kind reminders for the ones who may be missing information. She provides the feedback that allows for correction plus growth. She models leadership to the unit.

She herself has grown over these past 6 years. She began as a new nurse, willingly accepting roles of responsibility as they came along, took them on, and made them her own. She has received her BSN. Took the initiative to acquire her CMSRN while encouraging others to pursue this designation as well. She was unanimously voted in for CNS when the opening occurred. Our team had that much faith in her ability to be a great leader in this role, and she has proven this to be true time and time again.

When the role of Nurse Educator was presented, she was my first choice. She willingly took the role and tailored it to 5 Tower. She is that force for us that is so necessary; however, she may not receive all the recognition she deserves. There is a whole other side to Emily; it is her commitment to our unit and our patients that also makes her DAISY worthy.

We have patients who become like family for a time. She is committed to helping them on a personal level. She washes their clothes, buys them clothes, and shoes as the circumstances present themselves. She promotes goodwill by celebrating birthdays and other big moments in their lives. She freely gives of her time, talents, and gifts. She is dedicated to excellence in all she does. Recognition is not why Emily does what she does; I know this to be the truth about her. She pursues excellence because it's who she is.
