Mr. Hamilton never wavered in his support for her and for her loved ones. He led by example, and the compassion that he shared was something we will never forget.
Brian Hamilton serves as Assistant Nurse Manager for the ICU and the SDU. A personal passion of his is organ donation. He has been a strong advocate for organ donation and has worked closely as a liaison with LifeShare, our organ donation procurement network here in Oklahoma. He audits patients' records to gather data for LifeShare and for our hospital. Recently, we had a very young female veteran who was a frequent patient here at the OKC VA Hospital. Brian was called to see this patient while she was on a med/surg ward and collaborated with staff and physicians to facilitate her move to the ICU following a rapid response.
Once in the ICU, her condition declined over the next days. He worked closely with her loved ones as they made difficult decisions about her end-of-life care to include donation. He also collaborated with LifeShare as they began the tedious process of testing and communicating across the country to place organs that this family had agreed to donate. Mr. Hamilton came on a day off to spend quality time with Ms. G's loved ones and asked that we not pay him for that time. He wanted to give of himself to them to walk through this difficult time and process with them. The entire ICU gathered around Ms. G to do the pinning and then to send her on her way to the OR with an honor walk. The halls were lined with those who had cared for her and about her for so long. Mr. Hamilton ensured that he remained with the loved ones and Ms. G in the PACU as she was extubated. The procurement teams were all here and in the OR waiting for the gift of organs that Ms. G and her loved ones were selflessly gifting.
Unfortunately, Ms. G did not pass within the 2 hour time frame and was not able to donate in the end. Mr. Hamilton never wavered in his support for her and for her loved ones. He led by example, and the compassion that he shared was something we will never forget. This is only one example of what a great leader, nurse, and man Mr. Hamilton is. His work ethic in all that he does is stellar. He advocates just as passionately for all patients and all staff. He steps in and voluntarily went to night shift for a few months to work more closely with our night team. This was invaluable. He also has worked during the day and recognized that the night shift would need assistance, and he has gone home only to return to work the night shift. He goes above and beyond every single day, and he so deserves to be recognized as the great leader that he is.
