I’ve always been healthy, but recently faced some health challenges that led me to an endoscopy procedure at Memorial Hospital, Belleville. I don’t spend much time at doctors’ offices or hospitals, so even this minor procedure left me feeling a bit unsettled. After checking in, I was greeted by nurse Kelly Eastman, who smiled and chatted with me easily as she led me into the GI Department and my prep room. She was efficient in her nursing duties, but more importantly, I realized her demeanor and overall approach provided a sense of comfort as the time for my procedure approached – she reflected genuine care and compassion. At the designated time, Kelly took me into the procedure room and introduced me to the other staff members present. She continued to engage me in conversation, often coming closer to the bed and looking me in the eyes, showing patience and kindness throughout the time waiting for the procedure to begin.

I’m a bit claustrophobic, and in my final stages of preparation, I had a bite block placed in my mouth and then an oxygen mask placed over my nose and mouth. The combination was enough to startle me and immediately make me uncomfortable and a little scared. I couldn’t speak at the time, but Kelly must have sensed my unease because she came up from behind me, gently took my free hand in hers, and squeezed, letting me know she was still with me. I remember gripping Kelly’s hand and feeling an important connection that calmed me until the anesthesia took effect.

This memory did not come back to me until I was home after my procedure, and when I thought about Kelly’s quick and compassionate action, it made me smile. Her skills as a nurse were more than evident throughout my time with her that morning, but what stands out most is her ability to connect with her patients and be intuitive to their needs. The entire staff that day was kind and professional, but Kelly stood out as a nurse who connects effortlessly with her patients and truly makes a difference.
