During my labor experience, my L&D nurses were absolutely fabulous. My son was born and needed additional respiratory support. He continued to need this and could not be weaned off CPAP. After they got him settled, he was brought over to me on CPAP for me to be able to hold him for the first time. It was at this moment that the anesthesiologist came in and wanted to do an abdominal block and let me know I would need to pass the baby off to perform the procedure. Kristin, my son’s NICU nurse in the delivery room, stepped forward and informed the anesthesiologist that my baby would be going to the NICU and that I needed this time to bond and hold my baby for the first time. I am grateful to Kristin for advocating on my behalf. In this moment, I am not sure I could have stood up for myself.
