She was surely a light during this dark and scary moment for this mother.
Brenda has been a pivotal member of our emergency department for greater than a decade. She gives excellent care to all of her patients, she is a wealth of knowledge, and is often looked to as a resource for our department. Brenda was an essential part of the team caring for my critically ill patient in May of this year. The pediatric patient is well known to our facility for having very difficult-to-treat and stop seizures. The patient came in by EMS in critical condition, along with the mother of the patient and the patient's older sister, who was approximately 4 years old, due to the complexity of her seizures. The patient ended up needing to be transferred to a higher level of care to see her specialist and was transported by helicopter. The family is Spanish speaking only, and Brenda is bilingual and was at the bedside providing comfort and compassion to the mother during this critical situation. The hospital was able to secure transportation for the mother to get to Louisville, as the mother does not have her own car or car seat. The hospital was also able to provide a car seat to the mother to use so that the patient's older sister could be transported to the other facility. Brenda graciously offered to provide the translated education needed in order to provide the car seat to the family. It was obvious that the mother was at ease getting the information from someone in person instead of over the phone, as we normally are required to do for translation requirements. Brenda had her own patient assignment this day, but went above and beyond to show this mother compassion during this already stressful situation. She was surely a light during this dark and scary moment for this mother. Brenda is deserving of this award for her hard work, her dedication to our emergency department, and for the impression she leaves on her patients each day.
