When we went in for an induction at 8 am to have our first baby. We were filled with nerves and uncertainty about how the process would go. The first day was long and grueling. My body did not want to cooperate with the induction process. The staff would come in, monitor me and my contractions, and then I would have to walk and do whatever I could to try to get my body to respond. I was defeated and not sure what was next for me if nothing was progressing. Fast forward to day 2, still no progression with the induction. The 7 am shift nurse was Sheila. She came in, did the vitals, and sat down in the chair in our room. She immediately formed a personal connection to us, listening to how the last day went for us, and almost immediately, my husband and I felt a weight off our chests after a stressful 24 hours. I know the floor was extremely busy this day, specifically, and Sheila gave us her undivided attention, even if it was just to listen to us vent. This day, finally, things started to pick up, and the process was getting more intense, and Sheila made me feel so at ease and helped me through everything. Contractions were getting more intense, she helped me find the best positions for me to feel relief, and just truly supported me, which, in that moment, that’s all I needed. As the night progressed, things just got worse and more intense, and finally the morning of day 3, it was almost time for the baby's arrival! I was in active labor for the shift change when Sheila walked in. I was so relieved to know she would be there with me for the next 12 hours. It truly made such a difference to have her on the day of our delivery. I felt so comfortable with her. It was a brutal labor process, and I ended up needing a C-section. Through all of the pain and agony I was in throughout this day, I specifically remember Sheila wiping my tears through contractions and holding my hand on the OR table. There's not much the nurses can do during this time, but Sheila's support and comfort truly made a huge difference in my traumatic labor process, and I can't imagine having done it without her. She has truly left an imprint on our lives and made a difference in our labor and delivery process with her unwavering compassion and kindness for her patients. We spent 5 days in the hospital, and it was noticeable to us when Sheila had two days off- she was missed! Every nurse on labor and delivery is amazing and deserves to be recognized for their hard work, but Sheila will be a name we never forget.
