Hi! My 39-year-old cousin was recently in the ICU at Barnes Hospital. She was nearing the end of her life after going through a double lung transplant at Barnes-Jewish Hospital almost 8 years ago. I am sending this letter on behalf of my family. She was fortunate to get April as her nurse. April went above and beyond just caring for my cousin's medical needs. April and the respiratory therapist, J, created the best day in my cousin's life, as told by my cousin in a video. April and J put together a "wedding" within 24 hours in the ICU. My cousin and her boyfriend/caretaker had been together for 20 years and never married. April and J got my cousin a beautiful wedding dress, veil, jewelry, makeup, and flowers. They both helped to get her ready for the big day. The wedding was perfect! My cousin was a beautiful, beaming bride. I don't think there was a dry eye in the crowd. As I stated earlier, my cousin said it was the best day of her life and called April and J her "Fairy Godmothers". My family is very thankful for April and J. They will always hold a special place in our hearts for what they did for my cousin. April and J are two very special people making a difference in so many lives. They brought so much light into our family’s life when things were not looking too bright. We can't thank them enough for going above and beyond what is expected from them in an already stressful job. We need more Aprils and Js in our world.
