As a nurse tech in school for nursing, Priscilla inspires me. She demonstrated a level of commitment to her patients' emotional and physical well-being that I aspire to have every day, not just for this one patient, but for everyone she cares for.
Priscilla was the nurse for a patient who had dominant-side hemiparesis following a CVA. This patient was faced with drastic life changes and a support system that did not live locally. Priscilla acted quickly and with great empathy when she noted signs of depression in this patient. On one particularly difficult day, the patient wasn't speaking, pulling at lines, and refusing food, ultimately becoming hypoglycemic. Priscilla made it everyone on the care team's mission to encourage food.

Priscilla used meal supplements from dietary to make a custom chocolate milkshake for the patient. She made sure to put the shake in a different cup so that he could independently feed himself the shake. Priscilla made sure that everyone who was going to enter the room before the meal supplement arrived mentioned how good the milkshakes are. Nursing assistants, rehab, other nurses, and even EVS told this patient about the delicious chocolate shakes. When she brought in the shake, she made sure that everyone in the room was not focused on the shake or him eating, but focused on telling jokes and making the patient have fun. Before we knew it, he drank the entire thing. Priscilla found ways to get the patient food he would enjoy that also had the nutritional benefits he required. She changed the plating of his meals to help with his hemiparesis. She made mealtimes full of laughter and jokes. She made this patient laugh regularly, when previously his affect had been extremely flat. As a nurse tech in school for nursing, Priscilla inspires me. She demonstrated a level of commitment to her patients' emotional and physical well-being that I aspire to have every day, not just for this one patient, but for everyone she cares for.
