She was also my cheerleader as my energy and enthusiasm drained.
As I approached the delivery of my fourth child, my second born at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands, I was hesitant because a lot of factors out of my control weren’t going as I had hoped. When I came in for my scheduled induction, the baby’s head was not where it needed to be, and the cord was in a position that might warrant an emergency C-section. I worked with another awesome nurse all day to get the baby where she needed to be to safely induce labor. Emily’s shift began, and when we met her, we were so glad to get a friendly and supportive nurse to help us through labor. She knew I had worked all day to get the baby in a certain position and helped me maintain positions to keep the baby where she needed to be. She was also my cheerleader as my energy and enthusiasm drained. I hadn’t planned on getting an epidural due to a prior poor experience at another hospital with my first delivery. Emily spoke so highly of all the other professionals in labor and delivery that I decided to try the epidural. She physically and emotionally supported me as I got an epidural while experiencing some very rough contractions. I am so glad she laid out my options in an unbiased way because immediately upon getting the epidural, I went from 5cm to 10cm dilated in the span of approximately 30 minutes. Once Emily realized the baby was coming quickly, she went to gather help and call my OB. She returned to get me into position, but the baby decided to come sooner rather than later. Emily stayed calm and collected as the baby proceeded to come out. She instructed me when to stop pushing so she could get the baby’s cord unwrapped from her neck, and then she proceeded to help us bring our daughter earthside. As more nurses started to arrive, Emily quickly caught them up to speed, and everyone got to work. The attending OB, and a little while later, my OB came into the room, and everyone was able to integrate to do their part. My husband and I are still impressed with how level-headed Emily was through the whole process. We are also so grateful that she was there to help us because she ensured that the baby stayed safe as she made her sudden appearance. Emily not only established my confidence in her as my nurse by being professional and supportive, but in the others working in labor and delivery as well by speaking so positively and confidently of everyone else and their abilities. Emily really exemplifies what it means to be a great labor and delivery nurse, as well as a supportive team member of a department that requires cohesiveness among its professionals. It truly makes my last delivery so special, and we are forever grateful that Emily was our nurse, and everything turned out the way it did. She was truly a blessing to work with during a very exciting but also difficult time in my life! Thank you, Emily!
