I was at Rush Oak Park Hospital for my first colonoscopy and was extremely nervous. On the first floor, the nurse had struggled for quite a while and ultimately unsuccessfully to get an IV into my hand. It was sore and already bruising. She said it would be taken care of upstairs. I left the first floor, wondering how big the bruise on my hand would be and getting more nervous by the moment. Gabby was my nurse when I arrived upstairs. She was upbeat and reassuring about my procedure. Her confidence and easy humor helped me relax, and I will never forget her genuine squeal of joy when she discovered that I have not one, but two very prominent veins in my right inner arm. She talked animatedly with me as she inserted the IV and put it in so smoothly, I was shocked when I realized she was done. Gabby talked me through who was coming into the room and what to expect. She completely turned around an experience that had not started well initially. I felt cared for, oriented, and ready to go. Gabby embodies exactly what you want in a nurse, and I was so lucky she was assigned to me that day.
