As a fellow nurse, I saw the extra special attention and care in everything La’jimes did for my mom. It put a smile on my mom’s face every time she heard La’jimes’ voice.
My 85-year-old mother was admitted to PCU for 12 days. She is legally blind and extremely hard of hearing. La’jimes was assigned as the shift nurse for my mom. Whenever La’jimes and another discipline entered my mom’s room, La’jimes always told my mom who was there in a voice loud enough that my mother could hear. Because of my mom’s eyesight issues, La’jimes would also tell my mom what side of the bed she was on and what she was about to do, so my mom wouldn’t be startled. La’jimes would tell any other disciplines who entered the room to get close to my mom and talk loudly so there were never any surprises. La’jimes also made sure to pass on the information to the next shift nurses about my mom’s eyesight and hearing issues so that the family didn’t have to re-explain the issues every time a different discipline came into the room. La’jimes took the time to learn my mom’s facial expressions and their meanings. La’jimes knew my mom was hesitant to ask for anything, so she frequently asked my mom if she needed to be repositioned, food ordered, or pain meds. Even when La’jimes was assigned different patients, she still made an effort to stop in and see how my mom was doing. La’jimes also made sure my dad and other family members were taken care of by offering water or anything else they might have needed. La’jimes never got annoyed with our endless questions about labs, medication changes, or what occurred the night before. After mom had an angiogram procedure on her leg, we spoke with the surgeon and were somewhat confused afterwards by some of the things he said. We relayed this to La’jimes, and she stated she did not want us going home, not knowing the plan or what was next. La’jimes submitted a secure chat with the nurse practitioner and arranged for her to speak with the family and provide more explanation. As a fellow nurse, I saw the extra special attention and care in everything La’jimes did for my mom. It put a smile on my mom’s face every time she heard La’jimes’ voice.
